What Is a Heart Rate Monitor?

A heart rate (HR) monitor allows you to measure your heart rate during exercise or other activity, and/or record your heart rate to study later. HR monitors usually consist of a chest strap which measures and transmits your heart rate, and a watch or other wristband device which receives and displays your heart rate. Advanced models also include a stopwatch and record your average heart rate and calories burned during a timed activity. Some even come with corresponding computer software which allows you to download a workout onto your computer for detailed analysis.

The advantage of working out with a HR monitor is that you may ensure you are staying within the aerobic zone and therefore maximizing the fat-burning potential of your workout. HR monitors are also very useful when doing Intermittent Training.
