In Thailand, jasmine flowers symbolize motherhood. This exotic flower must be hand-picked before dawn so that its delicate scent doesn’t evaporate in the heat of the day. About 8000 blossoms are needed to produce one gram of jasmine essential oil. As a result, pure jasmine essential oil, or jasmine “absolute,” is one of the most costly of essential oils. But then, moms are worth it, aren’t they?

This month, we’re honoring moms with all-new spa therapies that feature pure jasmine essential oil. Besides its alluring scent, jasmine has a number of valuable properties. “I believe jasmine to be one of the most glorious, rich, complex, and satisfying essential oils to work with,” says Yael Alkalay, founder of Red Flower, a company that makes hair and body care products, candles, and perfumes. Topically, jasmine oil soothes dry, irritated and sensitive skin. It helps to regulate sebum production, making it valuable for use with blemished skin. Jasmine also helps in the relief of pain, cramping and muscle spasms. Midwives use it during childbirth to strengthen contractions and ease pain.
